Yes, the stories are true. I am already contemplating getting rid of the F-car. I just want something I can drive and not constantly worry about. As much as I love the Ferrari, maybe when I have a small collection and can allow for a car to sit and be sparingly driven I will get another. I’ve been doing lots and lots of contemplation, but now I want to contemplate this...
Turning the F-car into a JDM something and another supersport (or similar) bike; like the MV dragster 8000RR...
For the JDM I’ve been eyeing a few cars. At first I thought get a GT-R. But the “hey Doug #2” would never stop. Plus I like the R33 far better than the 32, and I car get a 33 in a few more years.
I had the opportunity to see Bird and Fiero’s Soarer Aero Cabin up close and personal, and I loved everything about it. Granted, I wont ever find a manual Aero Cabin like they did, but I can get a clean Z20 twin turbo fairly easily (as far as importing a vehicle goes).
The other option would be a DR30 RS Turbo. Still a Skyline, rarer than the fan-boy R32, but still cool IMO.
My two back burner options as well are the A20/A35 Celica and the C10 Skyline GT (these tend to get pricey and rarer to come across).
Thoughts or other ideas? I would like to keep the car in the mid teens prices wise so I can be out the door under $20k

Buy a a GTS-T and go hella JDM on it. Like bolt on flares, wide tires, and a front lip spoiler. Cefiro’s, Laurels and Soarer’s are pretty cool too. The cars you posted are sooooo nice too.

My vote goes for a R30 or R31 Skyline, no doubt. The R31 GTS-R is the best. Love those cars, they are so underrated! But if you’re looking to go Japanese, why not look a little earlier in history?
C10 Hakosuka
C110 Kenmeri
I love the Kenmeri personally, and the 2000GT Kenmeri looks just as good as the GT-R

the C10 is my dream “if I were to import something” car and they’re only going to go up in value.. but not sure how likely you’ll get one over and complied under your budget.
my dream one would be to get one in relatively rough condition and swap a triple carb L28 in there and some modern brakes and suspension. not a full restomod, but something that wouldn’t be embarrassingly slow.
R30’s are cool. I had a mate with one (Australian delivered) back in my late teens. We used to drift it back before we knew drifting was an entire sport. Sadly the car is no longer with us, and took its occupants with it.

lol. Actually no. I love driving it and all the quirks of ownership, except anytime I go driving so distracted tourist or moron on a cell phone almost side swipes me or rear ends me. If I go anywhere, I have to spend 10 minutes judging the likely hood of some soccer mom parking next to me and letting her 84 children swing all the doors open directly into the side of the car, while all the children jump out and use the side of my car as a bounce board for soccer balls and tennis balls and a storage rack for their jump ropes, etc. etc.

For under 20k$, the only things you can buy there are stock R30 Skyline (far from the one you’ve pictured) and the Soarer. Nice 2000GT Celica (JDM ones of course, not the USDM with 90hp) will go over 20k$ and honestly, don’t even think of the 2 doors Hakozukas... replicas based based on Prince 2000GT will go for 40 to 80k$ depsnding on condition... Original Hakos will go for close to 200k$. Even 4 doors Hakos will go for 30k$ +

Those C10 Skylines are just gorgeous in person. A guy that lives near me has one in LHD. Otherwise I’d be partial to the Celica but only because part of my learning to drive was in an early Celica.

Yup, but not 2000GT in perfect condition.
1600ST or GT are easy to find for pretty cheap... even cheaper than that actually. 2000GT in great condition (the 145hp version) are quite a bit moree expensive and they are the ones you want. Fully restored and somewhat modernized ones like the one you posted will go for close to 30k$
http://www.goo-net.com/usedcar/spread…
This one, while still around 16000$ before taxes and importation is pretty nice though... Not modernized and very much stock, but really nice nonethless for the price! This is not a “Liftback” like the first one I posted though, which is why it’s quite a bit cheaper than normal...

“but I can get a clean Z20 twin turbo fairly easily”
You don’t want that car. The 1G-GTE is toyotas worst engine of all time. It is VERY prone to failure. If you want an importable twin turbo Toyota get a JZA70. The 7MGTE Soarer is is far better choice. Just retorque the head and you will have trouble free motoring forever.
DR30 RS is going to be hard to find in good condition. Likely you will find only projects that need restoration and parts will be impossible to find. R31s on the otherhand might be easier to find. I saw two GTS-R for sale lately for less than $10k in the US. In Japan you can get them for cheap but expect to look for a few months. Even a Tommy Kaira M30 was on auction a couple months ago.
C10 “pricy” is an understatement. Even the most mediocre one is >$60k now. If you want a more classic looking skyline on the cheaper side try to find a C210 series 1. It will be similar to the Celica in price. Those celicas have skyrocketed in price too. Unless you want a project.
Consider the Infini FC Rx7, special edition RX7 with added lightness and a host of interesting injected in. Pulsar GTIR is another car to consider that you can easily find. Then you have the group of Tommy Kaira M30 (R31 Skyline with DOHC RB30DE, sounds glorious), Autech R31 (Autech trim GTS-R R31), or the regular R31 GTS-R or X. I would really like a M30, don’t care if it’s not turbo 240hp is fine enough in a 2800lb car. However it’s not like you can’t turbo that RB30 then you would have a monster on your hands as the RB30DET is a common skyline monster build.
If you want some interesting yet weird car take a look at the HB Mazda Cosmo Turbo.
There are just so many choices you are only hitting really the most popular items.
If you have $20,000 budget try finding a Lancia Delta Integrale or an Alpina BMW as well. Two other chocies people often don’t look for in Japan. I’ve seen 8v and 16v deltas for around the middle $5k-$7k there. The Alpina E30 that came with the M30 engine would be great.

If you look now you can find one that will be legal shortly. They started being built in 1990 so you can do it.
